A Georgia man remains behind bars after being accused of attempting to kidnap a child at a Walmart—even though multiple surveillance videos appear to contradict the claim.
The incident occurred on March 18 at a Walmart in Acworth, Georgia. The man, described by family and friends as a quiet shopper and caregiver, was arrested three days later after 26-year-old Caroline Miller told police he tried to snatch her 2-year-old son from her lap while she sat in a motorized cart.
Miller claimed the man asked her for help finding Tylenol before suddenly reaching for her child, resulting in what she described as a “tug of war.” Police took her at her word.
But store surveillance footage shows no evidence of a struggle. In fact, it reportedly shows the man calmly speaking with Miller, gesturing down the aisle, and then walking away peacefully. Additional footage captures him paying for his items and exiting the store without incident.
Despite this, he was charged with kidnapping, simple battery, and simple assault. He has been held without bond at Cobb County Adult Detention Center for more than a month.
His attorney, Ashleigh Merchant, says her client is being wrongfully accused. “He thought he was helping someone,” Merchant said, adding that her client was concerned the child might fall from the cart. “The video shows the truth.”
Further raising eyebrows is the fact that Caroline Miller is reportedly the same woman who previously reached a settlement with Lyft over unrelated legal claims, sparking concern about her credibility.
The case has drawn growing public attention, with many questioning why video evidence isn’t enough to free an innocent man. Supporters are now calling for his immediate release and a full investigation into the handling of the case.
His next hearing is scheduled for May 6. Coffee & Donuts News will be watching closely.
